Taking a step back from political activities

I became engaged in political activities just over seven years ago. I got involved in protecting Oregon concealed handgun license (CHL) privacy and exposing misinformation around the ACA (Obamacare) and Oregon’s tax Measures 66 and 67.

That led to running for office in 2010 (and losing) and subsequently getting deeply involved in the largest GOP county party in Oregon, including supporting my wife in her role as county chair.

I became the chief editor for Oregon Catalyst, Oregon’s oldest conservative political blog, and did extensive research and writing – for the blog, for Oregonlive/Hillsboro Argus and subsequently for the Salem Statesman Journal when we moved to Salem a little over three years ago.

Additionally, I’ve done speaking, presentations and interviews, as well as behind-the-scenes political research and data analysis for conservative causes.

I did all of this on my own time and on my own dime – I didn’t accept any compensation for any of it. For much of the time, it has been extremely time consuming – it has not been unusual for me to start my day several days a week between 2-4 a.m. to do research, writing or editing. Significant portions of weekends were spent on those same activities. That was on top of my regular day job, which has nothing to do with politics.

Throughout this year, I have found myself spending less and less time on political activities. I don’t feel as drawn to the political activities, and I find myself with little new to say politically.

I have been extremely grateful for all the opportunities I’ve been given – most especially the opportunity to give conservative issues a voice here in Oregon.

I appreciate all the more those who are willing to serve in the political arena – from both sides. It’s a tough, demanding and crucial job, and one that can be downright ugly at times. Especially here in Oregon, it isn’t a job one does for the money!

At this point I don’t know what the future may bring – but for now I’ll be taking a big step back from all things political – including my research and writing. For my life outside my day job – I’ll enjoy sleeping in until 6 or 7 a.m., and I’ll spend more time with my wonderful grandchildren.

Take care,

Dan
